A Wolf Burner in Winchester That Clicks Forever — Reading the Symptom
Clicking proves the spark half of the system is working, so a Winchester Wolf burner that will not catch is usually a gas-delivery question: a cap that is not seated, ports glazed by a boil-over, or a spark landing somewhere other than across the gap.
First, the line that outranks the rest of this page: if gas can be smelled and the smell will not clear, everyone leaves the house and the utility gets telephoned from outside. Not a repair company. Everything after this paragraph assumes a kitchen where the air is normal and a burner that simply will not take.
Now the useful thing about that clicking. Lighting a gas burner requires two independent systems to succeed in the same half-second: something has to make a spark, and gas has to be present in the space that spark crosses. When you hear clicking, one of those two has already reported for duty. The module is generating spark on demand, which means the electrical half of the problem is at least partly answered before you have looked at anything.
That is the framing worth carrying through the rest of this. The sound is evidence about the spark and no evidence at all about the gas. Almost every burner that clicks and refuses to light is a gas-delivery question wearing an electrical costume, and the checks below work down that side of the equation in order.
Start by finding out how much of the range is affected
Run every burner in turn and keep score. If exactly one refuses, everything shared by the others is exonerated and the search narrows to that burner’s own parts: the cap it wears, the ring of ports underneath and the electrode beside it. If they all hesitate, the shared things move to the front — the module, the gas entering the appliance, and the earth the ignition system relies on to work at all.
One observation will look alarming and is not. These tops usually feed every electrode from one module, so a single knob makes the entire surface click together. In a rebuilt kitchen out toward the Mystic Lakes, where the cooking surface sits in an island and the room is wide open, that chorus carries a long way and sounds far worse than it is.
Set aside one symptom as its own case: clicking that continues while every control is off. Nothing should spark unrequested, and that belongs in the last section of this article rather than this one.
Note the specifics before you disturb anything — which burners, how long it has been happening, and whether the top was cleaned recently. That last detail explains more of these than any other single fact.
The mechanical checks, which are most of the answer
Gas reaching the spark is mostly a mechanical matter, and the cap is where it begins. Every cap has one seated position on its base. Leave it sitting proud by a millimetre, tilted, or rotated so its locating features are not engaged, and the gas leaving the ports takes a path that never crosses where the spark lands. The spark stays perfect. The gas never meets it.
Check with the burner cold. Take the cap off, look at what it sits on, then let it back down under its own weight — it should find its position without persuasion and stay flat when you push gently on one side. Any rocking means it is not home.
Ports are next. Boil-overs bake into the slots and set hard, and a partly blocked ring pushes gas out unevenly so that the side nearest the electrode may get almost nothing. Soak them, work at them with a soft brush, and be patient. Do not push anything rigid through a port to clear it; those openings are dimensioned to shape the flame, and one that has been widened stays widened for good.
Moisture is the third check and the reason for the classic “it started right after I cleaned it” call. Water lying on the electrode or trapped under the cap will hold ignition off until it is genuinely gone, which takes longer than a wipe with a towel suggests. Leave the pieces off, let the air get at them, and reassemble when everything is dry rather than merely dried.
Where the spark is supposed to jump
Turn the lights down and watch one cycle closely. You can recognise a good one by eye. It is bright, it is tight, it keeps time with the clicking, and it puts itself down in the same spot each go — a short hop, tip to burner metal, nothing wandering. A spark doing that is aimed correctly, and if gas is arriving the burner will light.
A cracked ceramic sleeve around the electrode spoils it invisibly. Electricity takes the easiest route available, so once the insulation is broken the spark discharges through the crack instead of across the gap — often down into the burner base where you may see it flash in the wrong spot. Steep, awkward driveways in the Highlands mean appliances get manhandled on the way in, and a knock on delivery is a perfectly ordinary way for that ceramic to crack.
Residue does the same thing chemically. A film of grease or cleaner across the ceramic will conduct once it is damp, and the spark tracks along the surface rather than leaping through the air.
Both faults keep the clicking sound completely normal, which is what makes them so frustrating to diagnose by ear. The module is doing everything asked of it. The energy is simply going somewhere useless.
When the electrical side is the answer
The module is a small device that takes mains power and produces the repeating high-voltage pulses sent out to the electrodes. It is asked to do this when a switch behind a knob closes, and it stops when that switch opens again. That is the whole of its job, and it is either doing it or it is not — which is why continuous clicking is such a clean piece of evidence.
A switch that closes and then never opens produces exactly that. The module receives a permanent request and keeps firing, with every knob apparently off. The usual causes are a switch that has failed mechanically and moisture that has found its way behind the control panel, and the distinction matters because the second one sometimes resolves as things dry and the first never will.
Either way it is where a homeowner should hand over. Behind the panel is mains voltage sitting alongside gas controls, and a burner sparking with no knob turned is not a fault to leave running while you experiment. The symptoms that mean stop now
The gas smell that will not clear: leave, then telephone the utility from somewhere else. That instruction stands regardless of anything else on this page.
Three more findings end the home stage. A burner that still lights late once the cap is seated correctly and the electrode is clean and completely dry — a delay means gas has been collecting before it catches, and that is more urgent than a burner that does nothing. A range still sparking after every control is off. A burner that catches, holds for a moment, then drops out on its own, which points at flame proving rather than ignition.

It started right after I cleaned the range. Why?
Cleaning introduces the two commonest causes at once. Moisture across the electrode or under the cap blocks ignition until every trace has evaporated, and a cap put back a fraction out of position sends gas away from where the spark lands. Neither is a failure. Take the cap off again, let everything dry properly in open air, and set it back so it sits flat without rocking.
The burner keeps clicking even with every knob off.
Nothing should spark unrequested, so this one needs attention rather than patience. The module fires while a switch tells it to, and continuous clicking means that request is stuck closed — a switch that has failed in its travel, or water behind the panel bridging the circuit. Isolate the range at the breaker so it stops sparking beside a gas burner, then book someone to open the panel.
Can I clean the ports with a pin or a paperclip?
No — a rigid probe reshapes the opening, and that change is permanent. What works is patience: cap off, a soak in warm water, then a soft brush until the baked-on glaze lets go. Dry it fully before it goes back on. If a slot still looks blocked after that, leave it alone and have the burner looked at rather than risking a port that never behaves again.
